Bazhong City, Sichuan, is a small city in Sichuan, but it is known as the hometown of grottoes. It has South Niche, North Niche and West Niche, of which the South Niche is the best. It is large in scale, exquisitely carved and connected. It is an outstanding representative of ancient grotto art and the crystallization of Bazhong's ancient culture. This time I came to Bazhong for a day trip, of course I had to check in at Nankan Grottoes.

Located in the belly of Nankanpo Mountain, one kilometer south of Bacheng, the rock walls are more than ten feet high and hundreds of feet long. They are square and sharp, with niches arranged in layers and inlaid with Buddha statues. The statues in Nankan were first created in the Sui Dynasty, flourished in the Tang Dynasty, and were continuously expanded to form a large-scale grotto group. There are 176 niches with more than 2,700 statues. The cave art is very spectacular.

The statues in the South niche are characterized by their muscular bodies, plump faces, and rich clothes. Most of these statues are carved in high relief, with the folds of clothes and tassels depicted with smooth and bright incised lines, and the knife techniques are skillful and refined.
