In 1876, the Treaty of Yantai was signed between China and Britain, designating Beihai as a trading port. Consulates, churches, hospitals, foreign firms, and schools from eight countries including Britain and Germany were established in Beihai, leaving behind a collection of Western-style modern buildings.
These buildings include the former British Consulate, former German Consulate, former German Senbao Foreign Firm, former French Consulate, former Qing Post Office, and former Beihai Customs Building, all of which witnessed important historical moments.
In 2019, Beihai integrated Liberation Road and Zhongshan Road, connecting the former British Consulate, former German Consulate, former German Senbao Foreign Firm, former French Consulate, former Qing Post Office, former Beihai Customs Building, and other cultural relics and resources to create the "Impression·1876" Beihai Historical and Cultural Scenic Area. At the same time, the spatial environment was beautified and themed exhibitions were set up.
With the recent rise of traditional Chinese culture, museums represented by the "Impression·1876" Beihai Historical and Cultural Scenic Area have increasingly become popular city cultural landmarks for tourists in Beihai.
We can enter these Western-style buildings and, with the introduction of guides and the help of detailed historical materials and precious cultural relics inside the museums, review the history of the encounter and integration of Chinese and Western cultures in Beihai since the 1870s.
