Bai Ludong Academy, located at the southern foot of Wulao Peak in Lushan Mountain, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, is a world cultural landscape. It enjoys the reputation of "the first academy in the country" and is rated as "the first of the four major academies in China."
It was first built during the Shengyuan period of the Southern Tang Dynasty (940 AD) and is the first complete academy in China. During the Southern Tang Dynasty, the "Lushan National Academy" (also known as the "Bailu National Academy") was built, which is the only national academy in Chinese history established by the central government outside the capital. When the Song Dynasty Neo-Confucianist Zhu Xi was appointed as the governor of Nankang Army (now Lushan City, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province), he rebuilt the academy, lectured in person, determined the academy's rules and objectives, and requested the academy to be granted a plaque and imperial calligraphy. The academy became famous and became an important cultural cradle in China for hundreds of years from the late Song Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty. It is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese education and culture.
The White Deer Grotto Academy, along with Yuelu Academy in Changsha, Hunan, Yingtian Academy in Shangqiu, Henan, and Songyang Academy in Dengfeng, Henan, is collectively known as one of the "Four Great Academies of China." Later, it was also recognized as one of the "Four Great Academies of Jiangxi" along with Bailuzhou Academy in Ji'an, Jiangxi, Ehu Academy in Qianshan, Jiangxi, and Yuzhang Academy in Nanchang, Jiangxi.

Xianxian Academy
The first courtyard of the White Deer Grotto Academy is the Xianxian Academy. Key attractions include the main gate, the second gate, the Osmanthus Pavilion, the stele corridor, the Zhuzi Shrine, and the Baogong Shrine. Xianxian Academy is divided into two sections, front and back, by the central gate. A horizontal plaque inscribed "Xianxian Academy" by Li Shida hangs above the gate. To the left of the gate, a black lacquer vertical plaque inscribed "Zhu Xi Memorial Hall" in gold lettering by Li Tieying, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. The front yard is dedicated to a flower garden.
Zhuzi Temple
The Zhu Xi Shrine is one of the main buildings of Xianxian Academy. In 1709, at the request of Nankang Prefecture Professor Xiong Shibo, the Nankang prefect Zhang Xiangwen established this shrine dedicated to Zhu Xi. A stone self-portrait stands in the center of the shrine, along with Zhang Xiangwen's "Inscription on the Shrine of Wengong Zhu Xi" on the left and the "Rules of the White Deer Grotto Academy" on the right. As a memorial to Zhu Xi, the shrine also houses a nine-part exhibition on Zhu Xi's life and deeds.
Baogong Temple
Located west of the Zhuzi Temple, the Baogong Shrine, formerly known as the Xianxian Shrine, enshrines Li Bo, Zhou Lianxi, Cheng Yi, Cheng Hao, Zhang Hengqu, Chen Liaoqian, Tao Jingjie, Liu Xijian and his son, and other sages who made contributions to the White Deer Grotto Academy. As a memorial hall, the shrine houses a five-part exhibition titled "History of the White Deer Grotto Academy."
