The Forbidden City’s Audio Guide is Useless—Here’s What to Do Instead!

Walking through the Forbidden City feels like stepping back in time. Once home to emperors for nearly 500 years, this massive palace complex is filled with stunning architecture, intricate details, and a deep sense of history. But here’s the thing—because it’s so huge (and many buildings look similar), exploring it without a guide can get confusing fast. I tried renting the official audio guide, and it was a complete waste of money—it kept stopping, making it super frustrating to use. If you really want to understand the history and importance of each building, a real guide is 100% worth it.

Also, be prepared for the dry weather if you visit in March—I had dust flying everywhere, and if you have allergies, a mask is a good idea. Security is tight, with at least two checks if you come by subway, so pack light. Just bring water and a snack since food inside is both scarce and overpriced. Despite these small hassles, the Forbidden City is an absolute must-visit—it’s easy to see why it was the center of China’s power for centuries!#discoverchina
