Among the many wonders of Beijing’s Summer Palace, the Seventeen-Arch Bridge stands as a masterpiece—both in design and symbolism. Spanning Lake Kunming, this elegant stone bridge with 17 arches is not only the longest bridge in any Chinese imperial garden, but also one of its most photographed.
Each of its 540 intricately carved stone lions, all slightly different, lines the balustrades like silent sentinels. Look closely and you’ll spot mystical beasts and legendary motifs woven into the railings. Even the imperial inscription by Emperor Qianlong crowns it with royal grace.
The bridge gently curves like a ribbon over the lake, perfectly positioned to catch the light—whether it’s the morning sun or the glow of a winter sunset. And when the water reflects the arches, it’s like watching heaven mirrored on earth.
