The Tian Tan Temple of Heaven is a significant symbol of Beijing and one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in the city. With a history of over 600 years, this site was originally used for ceremonial rituals to pray for seasonal rain and abundant harvests, providing encouragement and morale to the people.
Originally named Tian Di Tan, meaning 'Temple of Heaven and Earth,' the name was later changed to Tian Tan, or 'Temple of Heaven,' after the construction of a separate Temple of Earth.
The temple is conveniently accessible via the subway:
- Line 5 (Purple Line): Get off at "Tiantan Dongmen" Station (天坛东门, East Gate of the Temple of Heaven). Use Exit A1 or A2.
- Line 7 (Light Brown Line): Get off at "Ciqikou" Station (磁器口, Cíqìkǒu). Use Exit A.
