Belize's Great Blue Hole is probably on the must-visit list for most backpackers around the world. Therefore, it's not always possible to get same-day tickets for the small planes that offer aerial views of the Great Blue Hole. It's best to book in advance. You can book through airline websites or local travel agencies.
To enjoy an aerial view of the Great Blue Hole, you can fly from the capital, Belize City, or from San Pedro or Caye Caulker. I flew from San Pedro. You can take a water taxi from Belize City to San Pedro, which takes about an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the number of tourists and weather conditions.
The entire flight lasts about an hour, and it doesn't matter where you sit because all seats are window seats. The pilot ensures that passengers on both sides get a clear view of the Great Blue Hole, so there's no need to worry about which seat is better. The flight is very smooth with no turbulence.
San Pedro is a beautiful island with a very small city center that can be walked from south to north in 15 minutes. However, a leisurely stroll along the seaside with photo opportunities can easily take up three hours. Seafood and coffee on the island are reasonably priced.
In addition to snorkeling and beach activities, I also visited the Iguana Conservation Center. Despite their fierce appearance, iguanas are actually vegetarians. According to the conservationists, iguanas will simply walk away if they are unhappy and will only wag their tails when very angry, never harming people. Visiting the conservation center is free, but I left a $10 donation to show my appreciation for the conservationists' efforts and hard work.
