One day in a city where steam rose in the air

A day in a hot spring city with steam

Two hours by train from Fukuoka.

As soon as I got off at Beppu Station, I felt the hot air and the smell of sulfur tickling my nose.

It felt like the whole city was a hot spring.

The first place I visited was ‘Hyeolji Onsen’.

Smoke rose above the hot spring water that was as red as blood,
and the unrealistic scenery was overwhelming.

The next place I went to was Umijigok,
where the water was an unbelievable blue-green,
and the steam that drifted over it was so beautiful.

I stood there blankly for a long time, staring.

At Kamadojigok, I tasted eggs steamed in hot spring water,
and at Tatsumakijigok, I watched the geyser erupt.

It felt like the earth was alive.

The accommodation was a traditional ryokan. There was a private open-air bath in the room,
and at night, I quietly soaked in the bath
and looked up at the sky.

I felt my body and mind warming up in the silent flow of time.

Beppu was not just a hot spring,
but a city remembered for its scenery, sounds, smells, and warmth.

If I could go again,
I would definitely take more than a day,
and stay slowly.
