Sayram Lake (赛里木湖)
Sayram Lake is a magnificent alpine lake nestled in the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. It is the largest and highest alpine lake in Xinjiang.
Located at Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang, China. It lies on the northern route of the Tianshan Mountain belt, at the border between Bortala and Ili Prefectures, approximately 2,070 meters (6,791 feet) above sea level. The size of the lake is about 458 square km, with a maximum depth of 92 meters.
Things to Do at Sayram Lake
Scenic Drive: Driving around the lake is the primary activity. The complete circuit is roughly 90 km and offers countless vantage points for photos.
Photography: It's a paradise for photographers. Capture the blue water, the flowers, the mountains, and the grazing livestock (horses, sheep, cattle).
Hiking and Walking: There are designated boardwalks and paths leading to the shore and to higher viewpoints.
Camping: While there may be restrictions to protect the environment, there are often designated areas or yurt stays available to experience the starry night sky.
Horseback Riding: Local Kazakh herders often offer short horseback rides on the lakeside grasslands.
Visit the Ancient Granite Tors (Guaitoushan): At the southern end of the lake, you can climb a hill for a panoramic elevated view of the entire area.
