The University of Bologna in Italy, founded in 1088, is said to be the oldest university in the world. Japan's first university, the University of Tokyo, was established in 1877. While this is already a university with a significant history, it is astonishing to think that the concept of a university existed in Italy nearly 800 years earlier, during the late 11th century, when Japan was still in the Heian period.
The building in this photo is the old campus of the University of Bologna. By paying an admission fee of €10, you can visit the anatomy lecture hall and the library. Additionally, when you look around the city of Bologna, you will notice that the sidewalks are all arcades. This is said to be a remnant of the time when students of the University of Bologna used to live around the university.
