The River of Reflections: Kanas Through Every Season

#chinatravel
📍 Location & Origin

The Kanas River is located in the Altay region of northern Xinjiang, near the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mongolia.

It flows out of Kanas Lake, a glacial lake nestled deep in the Altay Mountains at an elevation of over 1,300 meters (4,300 feet).

The river is approximately 125 kilometers long, winding through dense forests, valleys, and grasslands, before merging with the Burqin River, which eventually joins the Irtysh River — making it one of the few rivers in China that flows into the Arctic Ocean.
