Most people coming to Cebu overlook Cebu City to go explore the south of the island, either to swim with sardines/sharks or to enjoy majestic waterfalls.
Even though, Cebu City doesn't offer the same kind of natural landscapes, it is a great place to learn about Philippines history. Just take a stroll near Plaza Independencia and you'll be able to admire Fort San Pedro, the oldest military structure in Cebu, a monument dedicated to the victims of Japanese occupation and another one to the victims of the martial law era of the 70s/80s.
Walk a little further and you'll find Magellan's cross, the place where Magellan planted a Catholic cross when he first arrived in the Philippines in 1521. Next to it is Basílica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebú, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country.
