You've captured the essence of Chefchaouen beautifully! Here are your tips for exploring this enchanting blue town:
1. Feeling the Blue ๐ง
The entire town's blue hue symbolizes the sky and heaven, a prayer for God's protection. Locals also believe it helps cool the area and repel mosquitoes (though you noted the real coolness comes in the mornings and evenings!). Be prepared: the town is built on a hillside, so expect a lot of uphill climbs and stairs ๐ถโ๏ธ โ it's a real workout for the knees!
2. Getting Around ๐
Arrival & Departure (CTM Bus): You had trouble paying on the official CTM bus website and had to buy tickets at the physical station. It's best to buy your tickets in advance! Just search "CTM" on Google Maps to find the station's location.
Within the Town: The local transportation within the town consists of blue taxis ๐. Prices are usually around 10-15 Moroccan Dirhams.
To Akchour: If you want to go to Akchour, you'll need to transfer to a shared taxi at the CTM bus station. This costs about 25 Dirhams per person.
3. Must-See Spots & Activities ๐ธ
Old Medina Exploration: The entire old town is a maze of charming streets and alleys perfect for wandering and taking photos! ๐คฉ (Be aware, some specific alleys require a small fee for photos).
Bouzafer Mosque: This mosque is located halfway up the mountain. You recommend climbing up around sunset to get a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire blue town. ๐
Akchour Gorge: About an hour's drive from Chefchaouen. Once you arrive, it's approximately an hour's walk to reach the bridge area. You suggest bringing a pair of slippers, as you'll need to wade through water in some sections. ๐๏ธ The entire gorge is wonderfully cool and refreshing. You'll find villagers selling homemade tagine along the way โ the taste is decent (but watch out for them trying to overcharge!). ๐ฒ
Ras El Maa (Water Source): This is the town's water source, and each water point is uniquely decorated. ๐ง You can reach it by following the road upwards, and it gets very lively in the evenings. It's a great spot to see local life.
