The main canals in Chengdu include Fuhe, Nanhe, Shahe, Jiang'an, Dongfeng Canal and Bihe.These canals not only play an important role in the geographical layout of Chengdu, but are also closely connected to the history and culture of Chengdu.
Fuhe and Nanhe
The Fuhe and Nanhe are the two most important rivers in Chengdu. They both originate from the stone embankment weir in Pidu District and flow through many areas of Chengdu.The Fuhe River originates at the mouth of Shidiyan Dongzikou, Unity Town, Pidu District, and ends at Jiangkou Town, Pengshan County, with a total length of 97.3 kilometers; the Nanhe River originates at Sendxian Bridge and ends at Hejiangting, with a total length of 5.63 kilometers.
After the confluence of the Fuhe and Nanhe in Hejiangting, it is called the Funan River, and it continues south and eventually flows into the Minjiang River.
Shahe
Shahe, known as Shengxianshui in ancient times, originated from Dongzikou in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, flows southeast through the hinterland of the eastern suburbs, and finally returns to Fuhe, with a total length of 22.223 kilometers.Shahe is the main drainage channel of Chengdu City, mainly used for water supply to the eastern suburbs.
Jiang'an River
The Jiang'an River originated from the river gate in Dujiangyan City, flows through Wenjiang District, Pixian County, Jinniu District and Shuangliu District, and finally flows into the Fuhe River.It is one of the main drains of the Neijiang River in Dujiangyan, with a total length of 95.8 kilometers.
Dongfeng Canal
The Dongfeng Canal, formerly known as the Dongshan Irrigation Project, is drawn from the river water of Dujiangyan Prefecture and is mainly used to irrigate the east of Chengdu, the south of Xindu County, the north of Longquanyi District and the areas south of the Bihe River.The main trunk canal is 11 kilometers long and the North Trunk Canal is 35.9 kilometers long.
Pihe
The Pihe River originates from the Baijiang River in the Minjiang River in Dujiangyan. It flows through the Shidi Weir in Unity Town, Pidu District and then diverts into the Fuhe River and the Pihe River.The Pihe River flows eastward through Xindu County and finally enters Shaojia Temple.
These canals not only play an important role in the geographical layout of Chengdu City, but also are closely connected to the history and culture of Chengdu City and are an indispensable part of Chengdu City. Besides, these water arteries form numerous parks and alleys in Chengdu to be explored during inner city roaming!
