On my check-out day at The St. Regis Chengdu, I placed fresh flowers in the suite's vase, wrote a thank-you note for the housekeeping staff, cleared all trash, tidied up the room, and made the bed - trying to restore it to how it looked when I first checked in. This was my way of showing respect to The St. Regis. In fact, I always try to keep the room clean and tidy when leaving hotels, as a gesture of respect both to the cleaning staff and to myself.
1. The Wine Bar at The St. Regis Chengdu is an exquisite and elegant space. During afternoon tea, I observed several groups of foreigners coming and going - some reading, working, drinking, or chatting. Business executives in crisp suits discussed collaborations over coffee and desserts, or wine and champagne - all exuding sophistication and professionalism. While guests enjoyed their drinks, the staff began lighting candles to set the mood as dusk approached. Beyond the enchanting nightfall, The St. Regis's dedication to creating ambiance through this daily ritual demonstrated their commitment to excellence and style.
2. That afternoon, I had three cups of coffee, which unsurprisingly led to insomnia that night. The afternoon tea set was portioned for two, and they even added an extra tier specially for me. The presentation and design exemplified The St. Regis's signature refinement and luxury. Unable to finish it all, I called a friend in Chengdu to join me in tackling the treats while enjoying some conversation.
3. At The Wine Bar, above the counter hangs a stunning artwork - a specially commissioned mural masterpiece by Brazilian artist Chris Buissa. The eye-catching creation, which beautifully blends Chengdu's ancient and modern elements, perfectly complements the bar's sophisticated and charming atmosphere.
4. Creating a mural for their own bar is a St. Regis tradition. This reminded me of The St. Regis Macao's bar, which also features an artist-created mural. Designed by Portuguese artist Gil Araujo, it's a two-ton multidimensional masterpiece comprising 8,000 pieces of layered colored glass, illuminated by six LCD screens. This extraordinary work illustrates the harmonious coexistence of Chinese and Portuguese cultures throughout Macao's rich history. In Chengdu, the mural incorporates authentic local elements. Each St. Regis's traditional mural serves as a striking decorative centerpiece in their bars, and Chengdu is no exception.
5. During my suite stay at The St. Regis Chengdu, one day I walked to Huaxing Fried Egg Noodles on nearby Huaxing Street for lunch. I ordered tomato fried egg noodles with brown sugar zongzi. Initially, I found the noodles ordinary, but as I continued eating, the flavors grew on me. I later learned it's actually a famous local hole-in-the-wall restaurant. One evening, I dined at Panxun Shi, also nearby. The restaurant's name comes from Du Fu's poem "Guest Arrival." Their duck tongues were outstanding, though unfortunately, when I specifically ordered Kung Pao Chicken, it was sold out. Sometimes with food, I think it's about fate - deliberately sought-after dishes might not suit your taste, while randomly chosen restaurants can surprise you with incredible flavors.
6. At The St. Regis, butler service is a tradition, as I've mentioned in previous articles. Last time in Sanya, I deliberately "challenged" the butler by requesting watermelon juice near midnight, which was promptly delivered. This time, I "tested" them again by asking for help with packing my luggage on check-out day, though I usually pack by myself when leaving hotels.
7. To my surprise, two butlers arrived with bags containing professional packing materials, including compartment dividers for the bottom of the suitcase and separators for clothes - very professional indeed. Seeing this, I sheepishly admitted I just wanted to see how butlers pack luggage, not expecting such a grand gesture. So don't doubt The St. Regis butler service - if you have the chance, try it out and see what they can do for you. Within reason and their capabilities, they will surely satisfy you.
