Huanglongxi Ancient Dragon Temple | The River Is Spiritual, a Dragon's Shadow Persists
On the banks of the Nanxi River in the ancient town of Huanglongxi, stands the Ancient Dragon Temple. Though small, it bears the marks of time. Incense lingers between the green tiles and wooden beams, giving the impression that this place enshrines more than just a deity, but an ancient memory.
Legend has it that long ago, Huanglongxi, ravaged by rapid currents, was prone to frequent floods. Unable to prevent this, the people could only pray to the gods. One night, a giant dragon with golden scales suddenly appeared in the river, surging through the waves. Its tail lashed the waves, diverting the floodwaters out of the river. The next day, when daylight finally appeared, the villagers built a Dragon Temple on the riverbank to thank the dragon for its protection.
Some also say that this dragon was no ordinary dragon, but a guardian beast from Shu, transformed into the "Yellow Dragon," hence the ancient town's name, "Huanglongxi." The dragon statue enshrined in the temple bears a solemn expression, its eyes seemingly perceiving. During every Lunar New Year festival, locals come here to worship and pray for good weather and peace in all businesses.
