On nights when the hot Southeast Asian sun sets and you feel reluctant to just go back to your accommodation, I often looked for jazz bars. I love Thailand so much that I recommend four great jazz bars in Chiang Mai and Bangkok that I have visited multiple times.
1. Chiang Mai North Gate Jazz Bar The North Gate Jazz Co-Op
- As the name suggests, this jazz bar is located near the North Gate of Chiang Mai Old Town. It’s close and easy to find, and on the first floor, they sell T-shirts with the North Gate logo and various cute goods, making it a great place to buy souvenirs.
The bands performing change depending on the time of day. When I arrived a bit early around 5 PM, I was told there was a performance on the 4th floor. I enjoyed a very young and hip band’s performance, which turned out to be famous among jazz lovers, with fans following them around.
After 7 PM, when I went downstairs, another performance was happening on the first floor. So many people filled the front yard enjoying the show, and the atmosphere was so good that I didn’t want to leave that night.
2. Chiang Mai Thapae East Jazz Bar Thapae East - live music bar
- I loved my memories of this place from 7 years ago, so I came back to Thapae East Jazz Bar! It’s a place where you can truly feel the soul of jazz.
Seven years ago, I was mesmerized by the jazz melodies played by an elderly gentleman with white hair. The hippie-looking woman, who seemed to be the owner, expressed her excitement with her whole body, not caring about others’ gazes, creating an atmosphere that felt like a new world. I think that’s when I started to like jazz bars, even though I didn’t know much about jazz back then.
Returning to Thapae East exceeded my expectations again. A high-level band that has even released albums played powerful music, making the drinks flow smoothly. I had such a happy night, not sure if I was intoxicated by the alcohol or the music.
3. Bangkok Adhere The 13th Blues Bar
- Known as a legend among jazz fans, this small place near the Banglamphu Market has an old-school vibe but an incredible aura. The staff may seem a bit cold but surprisingly take good care of you like a tsundere. The first performance on the day I visited was by an elderly couple band, whose skilled acoustic guitar playing and decades of perfect harmony, along with music filled with experience and heartfelt remarks, moved me deeply. It’s a jazz bar with a subtle charm like a time travel experience, recommended for those who love old-school vibes.
4. Bangkok Firefly Jazz Bar Firefly Bar
- Located inside the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok hotel. Since it’s in a hotel, the prices are a bit high and there’s a dress code, so I felt a little hesitant before going, but I had a great time with the stylish interior, friendly and attentive service, and formal performances. If you want to flex a little and feel luxury in Bangkok, I recommend this place. The cocktails are delicious too.
