Wat Phra That Doi Kham, a famous temple in Chiang Mai, is a must-see for those into spiritual practices.
This important temple in Chiang Mai is over 1,300 years old and is located on Doi Kham, behind Royal Park Rajapruek, approximately 10 kilometers from the city center. Wat Phra That Doi Kham was built during the reign of Queen Chamadevi, King of Hariphunchai.
It was built by her two sons in 1230 CE.
It consists of a chedi containing the Buddha's relics, a sermon hall, monks' quarters, and a stucco Buddha image. Originally named Wat Suwannabanpot, the temple was later called "Wat Doi Kham" by locals in 1966 CE. At that time, Wat Doi Kham was deserted. Later, a crypt was opened, revealing numerous artifacts, including the Phra Rod Luang, a large gilded sandstone Buddha image, and the Phra Sam Mo (clay) Buddha image, which were enshrined at Wat Phra That Doi Kham.
Wat Phra That Doi Kham is also renowned for its sacredness, attracting numerous visitors to pay their respects and make vows. In addition to being a place of worship for locals, this temple is also a symbol of Thai Airways, which is used to visually define the area before landing at Chiang Mai Airport.
