Review of Villa Klang Wiang

It’s like staying at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Burma in 1910. This is what I told the owner this morning. I chose to stay here based on the idea of a small boutique hotel in the city center of Chiang Mai, a place I had never visited before.

First Impression - The hotel is very small, with only about 10-20 rooms. It is located in a deep alley near the city moat. There aren’t many nearby cafes, restaurants, or bakeries. Parking is limited. However, the lobby, walkways, courtyard, dining area, swimming pool, gym, and garden are all beautifully designed and well-equipped. Despite having many decorative items, the space doesn’t feel cluttered. Why? Read on.

Suite - I stayed in room B10, approximately 80 square meters, with a stunning and clear mountain view from the spacious balcony, which can comfortably seat ten people. The room has high ceilings of 3.5 to 4 meters and is elegantly decorated with carpets, a buffet cabinet, a desk, and a four-poster bed. The furniture is abundant. The bathroom is less impressive than the bedroom but still fully equipped.

Food - Breakfast is served as a set menu, delicious and beautifully presented every day. While the selection isn’t extensive, the quality is excellent. The table settings are exquisite, even including a proper butter knife, which is rare these days.

Highlight - The architecture and interior design are the standout features. The tall doors and windows, 4-meter-high ceilings, brass handles, Persian rugs, potted plants, cabinets, tables, crystal chandeliers, bookshelves, console tables, armchairs, and chairs are all meticulously arranged. Every corner, walkway, dining area, and pool is symmetrical and perfectly balanced. Despite the abundance of items, the space doesn’t feel overwhelming. Family silverware and fine china are beautifully displayed. The materials used include fine teakwood or rosewood, with many antique pieces. The décor combines Lanna-style elements with the structure of a grand Edwardian home. There’s nothing cluttered on the walls or any English cottage-style wallpaper.

Overall Rating: 9/10
