🙏Wat Phra Singh, a royal temple, is an ancient temple in Chiang Rai Province. It is believed that it was built in 1928 during the reign of King Maha Phrom. This place used to be the place for the water pouring ceremony to pledge allegiance.
🙏The name Wat Phra Singh is because it used to be the place where an important Buddha image of Thailand was enshrined, namely Phra Buddha Sihing or Phra Singh.
🙏Phra Buddha Sihing has been a sacred Buddha image of Thailand for a long time. There is evidence in Sihing Kananitan that it was built around 700 B.E. in Sri Lanka and enshrined in Sri Lanka for 1,150 years. It was enshrined in Thailand in the following order: Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Ayutthaya, Kamphaeng Phet, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, and now Bangkok.
🙏Currently, Wat Phra Singh is the place where a replica of Phra Buddha Sihing (or Phra Singh) in the Chiang Saen style in the Mara-Vijaya attitude is enshrined. It is made of bronze and gilded inside the castle arch in the glass chapel.
Other sacred places and objects that should be visited in the temple include:
🏰 Ubosot, Lanna architecture, Chiang Saen period, the structure is made of hardwood, it is assumed that it was built around 1889 - 1890, renovated twice. The principal Buddha image in the Ubosot is Phra Phuttha Sihing (Phra Singh Nueng), a Chiang Saen Singh Nueng style Buddha image, bronze, gilded, in the Mara-Vijaya posture. It is unknown when it was built. It is a sacred Buddha image of Chiang Rai with a graceful appearance.
🏰 The main door of the Ubosot is made of wood, intricately carved with paintings, a supreme riddle.
🛕 The pagoda is an old pagoda, Lanna architecture, built at the same time as the Ubosot. Later, it was renovated. It was originally painted white, but now it is painted bright gold. It is enshrined on the west side, behind the Ubosot.
🛕 A replica of the Buddha's footprint carved on a sandstone slab with ancient Khmer script. It is assumed that it was built in the reign of King Mangrai. 🛕Bell Tower, a contemporary architecture in the Lanna style, with a bell in the shape of a leaf, cast from brass, excavated at Wat Phra Singh. The lower floor of the bell tower is used as a drum tower. 🍀The Bodhi tree was brought from Bodh Gaya, India.
🍀The Sri Lankan Sala tree was brought from Sri Lanka.
