🛕Wat Chedi Luang is located in the ancient city of Chiang Saen. It enshrines a round bell-shaped chedi with an octagonal base. It is the largest Lanna-style chedi in Chiang Saen.
🙏Phra Saen Phu, the third king of the Mangrai Dynasty and grandson of Phraya Mangrai, built the temple in 1887 B.E. after building the Chiang Saen city walls for 3 years. He built a grand viharn in the middle of the city and built a chedi to cover the original chedi. This chedi enshrines the relics of the Buddha's breastbone.
🏡Wat Chedi Luang has been renovated and built continuously. Later, it was abandoned along with Chiang Saen during the war with Burma.
🏚Until around B.E. 2503, monks came to reside and build new structures on the ruins of the old ancient site. It has been continuously cared for by the Fine Arts Department.
Important ancient sites include:
🛕 The main chedi is made of brick and mortar. The lowest base is a square pedestal base. Next is the octagonal base, layered in 2 layers, 4-layer lotus base, the top is a round bell-shaped body, with a belt around the bell-shaped base supporting the spire and dewdrops around the base.
🛕 The pagoda has been renovated in 3 eras, once covered with gold leaf. In the first era, it was a small bell-shaped pagoda inside. In the later era, the pagoda was increased in size, and in the third era, the lowest base was expanded to be more stable.
🏰 The royal chapel is made of brick and mortar. It has a rectangular plan. It was reinforced at the front twice. Large stones were used as foundations under the pillars. This is evidence showing the remaining construction techniques of the Chiang Saen era. There is only 1 large round pillar left.
🏰 Currently, only the base, the back wall of the Buddha image, and the side of the base of the chapel remain as originals.
🏰 Inside the chapel, there is a principal Buddha image made of stucco in the Lanna art style, the Mara-Vijaya attitude, with a relatively large head compared to the body, a round face, and a lotus bud-shaped halo.
