🙏Wat Sri Koet is another ancient temple in Chiang Rai. It is located in the eastern city wall. It was built in 1983. It is an auspicious temple of the city.
🌳The name of the temple is likely to come from the Sali tree. The word "Sali" (Sa-li) is a northern language that comes from the word "Sri" and the word Sri comes from "Sri Maha Pho". The Sali tree is the Sri Maha Pho tree. There are many Tan Sali (Bodhi trees) in the temple area. Therefore, this temple is considered the birthplace of the Sri Maha Pho tree.
🏕In the past, there were buildings in the temple that were in traditional Lanna art, namely the old ordination hall, built in 1870. Later, it was damaged and deteriorated, so it was demolished.
🏰And a new ordination hall was built in 1975 in the Lanna style, the school of craftsmen Kru Ba Srivichai. The gable is decorated with large carved wood and Lanna-style eyebrow arches. The carved patterns are lacquered and gilded. The brick pillars and walls, the decoration of the Naga coiled around the handrail in front of the chapel, make it look special and different from other temples. 🏰 The doors and windows, the eaves, the pediments of the various buildings are beautifully carved teak.
🙏 The chapel houses the principal Buddha image, a stucco Buddha image, which has been chipped off and re-plastered in the Lanna style, local craftsmanship style, with a plump face similar to the Buddha image in the Chiang Saen style.
🙏 In front of the principal Buddha image, there is the Phra Phuttha Si Ming Mongkhon, a small bronze Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya attitude, an ancient Buddha image in the Chiang Saen Singh Song art style, around the 21st Buddhist century.
🙏 On Songkran Day, the temple invites Phra Phuttha Si Ming Mongkhon to be enshrined under the Sala tree for people to bathe and pay homage.
🙏 Inside the chapel, there is also a Lanna-style pulpit, lacquered and gilded, and a cabinet for storing palm-leaf manuscripts in the Lanna style, which is very old.
🛕 The pagoda is an old bell-shaped pagoda in the Lanna style. The twelve-angled chedi is unknown when it was built. Currently, a new chedi has been built to cover it. The chedi's spire is a five-tiered local style with a garland base supporting a gourd-shaped bell and niches with standing Buddha images in all four directions.
