Wat Phra That Chom Kitti, an important religious site of Chiang Saen, is believed to have been built over 1,000 years ago.
Some inscriptions tell the story that when the Lord Buddha came here, he pulled out a hair and enshrined it at Phra That Chom Kitti. He then prophesied that this region would continue to have Buddhism for 5,000 years. Some inscriptions also say that Phra That Chom Kitti was built by King Pangkarat in 1481. When it was completed, he received the relics from Phra Buddhakosa, who traveled to Sri Lanka to study Buddhism. Since then, Phra That Chom Kitti has been an important place of Chiang Saen for over 1,000 years, regardless of the changes in eras and generations of rule.
Tourists and even Chiang Saen residents often visit Phra That Chom Kitti, believing that if they pay homage and pray, they will be blessed with titles and ranks. Fame and fortune, people praise, success in becoming a lord, the elders who come to pay homage
