I went to the Chiayi Old Prison (Prison Museum). This prison, built during the Japanese colonial period, is now open to the public as a museum. The first thing you see when you enter is the unique radial structure of the prison cells. It reminded me of my visit to Abashiri Prison.
Inside the facility, you can learn about prison life and the work of the prisoners at the time, and it was particularly impressive to see that the guardhouse and factory remain as they were. It was interesting to learn about the history little by little while listening to the guide's explanations. In addition, the wooden corridors and ceilings were incredibly beautiful, and the architectural beauty was so great that it was hard to believe it was just a prison. It was a place where the influence of the Japanese colonial period remains strong, and it was a very valuable experience for me, a history lover. It is easily accessible from Chiayi City, and I feel that visiting here gave me a deeper experience of Taiwanese history.
