Did you know that China is home to 56 ethnic groups, each with their own unique culture and costumes? Tourist destinations in China offer the opportunity to rent these traditional costumes and take photos. This article introduces some of the most common ethnic costumes. Please note that the costumes shown in the photos are not faithful reproductions of the originals, but have been adapted for photogenic appeal.
1️⃣ Hani People
Main Residence: Yunnan Province
The traditional Hani costumes are vibrantly colorful and an important symbol of their culture. Men wear black and blue outfits, while women wear red and black embroidered outfits. The patterns on the costumes are imbued with meanings related to nature and the universe, and are both practical and beautiful. The designs are particularly designed to keep out moisture and allow for ease of movement.
2️⃣ Tibetan People
Main Residence: Qinghai Province, Tibet Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province
Tibetans, an indigenous people of the Tibetan Plateau, prefer felt and cashmere clothing. Tibetan clothing is characterized by long sleeves, wide waists, long dresses, and high boots. It's often decorated with gold and jade, making it a great place for photo ops in places like Jiuzhaigou, where Tibetan culture remains strong.
3️⃣ Uyghurs
Main Place of Residence: Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region
Uyghur men wear a belted coat called a "chapan," while women wear a dress with a jacket or blouse. The Uyghurs have a unique clothing culture, and photo ops in their traditional attire are popular in the old towns of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
4️⃣ Mongolians
Main Place of Residence: Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
Mongolian clothing often reflects the grassland lifestyle. Their vibrant, loose-fitting clothing is also suitable for horseback riding. Red and green silk or satin belts are characteristic, creating a beautiful design that evokes their grassland culture.
5️⃣ Miao People
Main Areas of Residence: Guizhou Province, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Miao costumes are vibrantly colorful and come in a wide variety of designs. They are particularly famous for their silver hair ornaments, which are often worn on the head when wearing traditional ethnic clothing. In Hmong villages in Guizhou and Xijiang provinces, you can take photos wearing these costumes against the beautiful scenery.
