Chongming Island

Every weekend, visitors from Shanghai and its surrounding cities visit the rural island of Chongming, China, a beautiful island that draws local tourists for its ecology and agriculture. Together, designers and students collaborated to construct a pavilion that would activate public space in this rural area. The choice of bamboo as the primary material for the project gave literal and figurative shape to the design: the pre-material production, processing, and on-site installation were all important considerations. Bamboo is a local resource that, after being subjected to high-temperature cooking, carbonization, and corrosion treatment, is easily transported to the construction site.
