Colmar | The Fairy-Tale Town from Hayao Miyazaki's Imagination

🇫🇷 Colmar is a gem of Alsace that I really wanted to see, but the weather made some adjustments.
Fun Facts:
▪️The city has its own Statue of Liberty. Why? Colmar is the birthplace of the sculptor Bartholdi, the same one who created the statue in New York. I didn't see the real thing in either place, but I did see the chocolate one 😉
▪️A good part of the city is the sculptor's creation, which you can learn about by riding a steam train through the historic center with an audio guide in 16 (!) languages. There's even a Russian one. They don't tell much, but you start to get a sense of what's what, and it's also a great way to see the details of the houses in the Quarters of Occupations, Tanners, Merchants, and Fishermen (the steam train even has a transparent roof). Cost: 8 euros.
▪️One of the inconspicuous streets in the center has its own peeing boy. They even dress him up in different costumes, just like in Brussels. But here, for some reason, he doesn't pee.
▪️The city has a chocolate and wine museum. Wineries and chocolate factories are like mushrooms in Alsace. There are not only bike and walking wine routes, but even Segway tours. Both museums offer interactive activities and tastings. It's best to visit both, and I'll tell you which one to visit first.
Any guesses?
▪️Alsace also has its own macarons. Not macaroons. These are handmade coconut cones that are served from the open windows of any artisan bakery. Basically, you can sample them without having to eat lunch 😀
My favorite is the traditional ones, without any additives. True, one guy talked me into trying it with rum 🤭
▪️ The main attraction is the Little Venice neighborhood. You can buy gondola tickets at the cafe next to the bridge, where everyone takes photos. A 25-minute ride costs 8.50-9 euros.
The town is like something out of a fairy tale, even on a cloudy day!
Time of visit: September 2025
