Daegu Arboretum

The Daegu Arboretum spans over 74,000 pyeong and was originally a landfill site for Daegu's municipal waste, accumulating up to 4.1 million tons of garbage between 1986 and 1990. To address environmental concerns, the government covered the site with 1.5 million cubic meters of construction residual soil from 1996 to 1997, creating land approximately 6 to 7 meters high. Continuous tree planting followed, and the arboretum was officially completed in May 2002. It stands as a prime example of ecological restoration. The arboretum features 21 themed gardens, including coniferous, broadleaf, birch, wildflower, medicinal plant, and dye gardens. It houses over 400 species and approximately 60,000 trees, along with 1,100 flower beds containing over 800 species and 130,000 plants. Additionally, there are 40 types of bonsai, totaling around 300, and 200 species of cacti, amounting to over 2,000 plants. The arboretum also showcases more than 300 uniquely shaped ornamental stones. Located near the city center, this urban arboretum is beloved by Daegu residents for its functions as a site for daily observation, field trips, educational research, and leisure.
