After spending half a month in Tibet, what impressed me the most was the secret northern Tibetan wonder of Sapu Sacred Mountain and the holy lake! This self-guided travel guide is shared for those who want to visit✨
Sapu Sacred Mountain is truly breathtaking! Under the blue sky and white clouds, the pyramid-shaped snow mountain reflects on the emerald lake surface, and every shot looks like a masterpiece. It is recommended to stay in Baiga Township, Biru County, to catch the stunning sunrise on the mountain🏔️
Three must-visit spots highly recommended:
1️⃣ Yanghu (Yamdrok Lake)
One of Tibet’s three sacred lakes, the water changes to a dreamy blue-green with the light, and you can see herds of Tibetan antelope along the lakeside road. Best to shoot between 4-6 PM when the light is super gentle~
2️⃣ Holy Elephant Gate (North Shore of Namtso Lake)
Here you can see the most spectacular view of Namtso! A giant stone elephant stands by the lake with the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains behind it. Bring a telephoto lens for photos📸
3️⃣ Sapu Sacred Mountain
A hidden secret deep in the mountains of Biru County! The main peak’s pyramid shape is very unique. The best photo spot is by Samu Lake. The best season is from May to October; heavy snow in winter closes the mountain❄️
🚗 Transportation Tips:
It takes 10 hours to drive from Lhasa, and the mountain roads are dangerous, so it’s recommended to travel in groups or hire a local driver. A border pass is required to enter Sapu, so it’s most convenient to get it in advance at your place of residence~
🏡 Accommodation Suggestions:
Only Tibetan family homes are available inside the Sapu scenic area, with simple conditions but great for stargazing! Or stay in Biru County town (2 hours by car), recommended is the Holy Land Biru Hotel.
📸 Photography Tips:
Be sure to bring a tripod! The light is best in the early morning and evening. Remember to wear bright-colored clothes for better photos. At 4800 meters altitude, move slowly—don’t be like me, running and jumping and ending up with altitude sickness😂
