The Diyarbakır City Walls are among the most impressive fortifications I have ever seen. Stretching nearly 6 km around the old city, these basalt stone walls date back to antiquity and were expanded during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, they are a true symbol of the city’s rich history.
Walking along the walls gave me a sense of stepping back through centuries of civilizations. The massive towers and gates, especially the iconic Mardin Gate, showcase incredible military architecture. From the ramparts, the view of the Tigris River valley and the bustling city below was absolutely stunning.
The atmosphere here is unique—history, culture, and daily life blend seamlessly. A visit to Diyarbakır feels incomplete without exploring these majestic walls, which stand as a proud reminder of the city’s enduring legacy.
