The Divine Water-Control Shrine: Erwang Temple at Dujiangyan

Nestled at the foot of Mount Yulei on the east bank of the Minjiang River in Dujiangyan, Sichuan, Erwang Temple was built to commemorate Li Bing and his son, Erlang, the masterminds behind the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. Facing the river with mountains behind it, the temple is enveloped by towering ancient cypresses and enjoys a serene atmosphere, earning it the poetic name “Celestial Capital of Mount Yulei.”

The temple complex features magnificent architecture, largely restored during the Qing Dynasty. Inside the halls, statues of Li Bing and his son are enshrined, while stone walls are carved with hydraulic maxims handed down by Li Bing, such as “Dredge the channels deep, keep the weirs low.”

As a core cultural landmark of the World Heritage-listed Dujiangyan scenic area, Erwang Temple stands as enduring testimony to over two millennia of hydraulic wisdom on the Chengdu Plain. #hellohalloween
