If you're bringing your kids to Dunhuang, summer is the perfect time! Dunhuang in summer is breathtakingly beautiful—grasslands, lakes, snow-capped mountains, deserts, Danxia landforms, starry skies... Over 1,000 kilometers of natural wonders that you have to see to believe! Lean against the Singing Sand Dunes, step into the palaces of Han and Tang dynasties, follow a camel caravan into the sea of sand, and search for the Crescent Moon Spring hidden in the desert. The beauty of the Northwest is truly worth it 🏯
【Our Itinerary】
Day 1: Arrive in Xining
After arriving in Xining, we took a taxi to the hotel to rest up and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Day 2: Xining → Qinghai Lake
Morning: Joined a fun-filled parent-child carnival on the grasslands! Visited a Tibetan family, rode horses, tried archery, and dressed up in traditional Tibetan attire for photos—the kids had a blast! 🥳
Afternoon: Kids experienced making Thangka, known as the "Oriental Oil Painting" in the West, while parents enjoyed a relaxing afternoon tea.
Evening: Stayed in a premium lakeside hotel with stunning views—sunrises and sunsets right from our room! 🏜
Day 3: Qinghai Lake → Xining → Zhangye
Morning: Cycled around Qinghai Lake 🚴—the crystal-clear blue waters were mesmerizing. With a professional guide and support vehicle, it was both safe and enjoyable.
Afternoon: Took a high-speed train to Zhangye, cutting travel time and making the journey effortless.
Day 4: Rainbow Danxia → Jiayuguan → Jiuquan
Morning: The stunning Danxia landforms looked like a natural oil painting 🎨. Kids learned a lot from the prehistoric geology lesson at the geological museum.
Afternoon: Explored Jiayuguan Fortress, immersing ourselves in the history of this ancient frontier stronghold.
Day 5: Jiuquan → Dunhuang → #SingingSandDunes & Crescent Moon Spring
Morning: Enjoyed lunch in Guazhou, sampling local delicacies.
Afternoon: Arrived in Dunhuang and checked into Dunhuang Resort, which overlooks the Singing Sand Dunes—stepping into the hotel felt like entering a Han-Tang dynasty painting. Rode camels 🐫 with the kids and watched a breathtaking sunset—a rare and precious family moment.
Day 6: Mogao Academy → Mogao Caves → Desert Starlight Dinner
Morning: At Mogao Academy, kids tried clay painting and seal carving, experiencing the charm of intangible cultural heritage.
Afternoon: Visited the Mogao Caves with hard-to-get Class A tickets (even harder than securing Spring Festival travel tickets!). A professional guide explained the eight regular caves, turning the visit into a vivid encyclopedia for the kids 📕.
Evening: Desert dinner + stargazing session under the starry sky while enjoying Dunhuang-style cuisine—pure romance! 🌌
Day 7: Dunhuang Resort → Return Home
Time to head back! As the plane flew over the Qilian Mountains, we marveled at the majestic peaks and snow-capped summits, bidding farewell with hearts full of memories.
The Dunhuang route is quite long, and self-driving with kids would’ve been exhausting, so we opted for a family-friendly tour. The itinerary was perfect for kids—no rushing, with hotels, private transport, and attraction tickets all included. The guide even helped look after the kids and organized games, giving parents a real break 🤩. Plus, we stayed at the highly sought-after #DunhuangResort and enjoyed lakeside rooms at Qinghai Lake—absolutely top-tier experiences! The kids loved the educational activities, learning tons while having fun.
