Desert escapes, ancient art, and surreal landscapes—here’s my Xiangyang and Dunhuang adventure that’s all about unplugging from city chaos! 🏜️✨
Top Spots to Visit:
Mingsha Mountain And Crescent Spring (鸣沙山月牙泉) — Just 6km south of Dunhuang (Jiuquan), this spot brings otherworldly golden dunes and that legendary blue oasis. Walk the sand ridges at sunrise or sunset for epic views and fewer crowds (tickets ¥110). Opening hours are 06:30–18:30 (Oct 16–Nov 9), so get there early!
Don’t miss the Mogao Grottoes — even if it’s cloudy or drizzly, those ancient Buddha statues carved in stone are unforgettable. My tip: go for the guided tour to unlock all those hidden historical gems and see the largest Buddha statue up close. Get outdoor snaps, even in rainy weather—the dramatic skies make the carvings pop!
Desert Away from the City:
Both sites are the perfect break from city noise (Xiangyang is your chill entry point, and Dunhuang takes you straight to raw nature and culture). Pro tip: evenings are serene, with fewer tourists—total desert zen.
Getting Around:
Local taxis or buses work well for the short ride out of Dunhuang. Most hotels can help call a cab; keep some cash handy. If you want full freedom, consider booking a car or hiring a driver via trip.com.
Food Fix:
Try Dunhuang’s red dates and lamb noodles at small local restaurants near the Crescent Spring entrance—a must-eat for legit desert energy!
Quick Tips:
Bring sun protection—even on cloudy days, the desert UV is no joke.
Pack a reusable water bottle (local shops pricy!)
Weather swings: Pack layers. Cloudy can flip to blazing in minutes.
