Durmitor: a place where the mountains breathe

#hellohalloween

If you're looking for Montenegro without the sea, come to Durmitor. The air here smells of pine, and the mountains are reflected in glacial lakes. Everything seems to live at a different pace—slow, calm, and present.

Durmitor National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It boasts 18 peaks over 2,000 meters, dozens of trekking trails, and the famous Black Lake (Crno Jezero), which lies at the foot of Mount Medved. It's blue during the day, and almost black in the evening, like a mirror of the sky.

📍 Location: Northwest Montenegro, near the town of Žabljak.
🕐 When to go: June through September—the rest of the year, it's cool, and many trails are closed due to snow.

How to get to Durmitor

🚗 By car:
From Podgorica – about 3.5–4 hours by road through the Morača Canyon and passes. From Kotor – about 4.5 hours. The road is scenic, but with some switchbacks.

🚌 Public transportation:
Buses from Podgorica and Nikšić run daily to the town of Žabljak, taking about 4 hours. In summer, there are 2–3 buses per day.
From Žabljak, the park entrance and Black Lake are a 20–25-minute walk away.

🎫 Entrance: about €3 per person (paid at the park entrance).

What to do in the park
- Walk around Black Lake – the route takes an hour to an hour and a half.
- Climb Mount Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m), the highest point in Montenegro. — Rafting on the Tara River is one of the best adventures in Europe.

☕ Tip: In Žabljak, you can rent a wooden chalet for €30–40 and watch the sunrise with a view of the mountains.
