Shimotake-cho, Minami-Oji Police Quarters during the Japanese Era

Location: No. 145, Nanda Road, East District, Hsinchu City

Introduction: The Nandalu Police Dormitory was completed during the Showa era. The area was located southeast of Hsinchu City at the time, close to the Hsinchu Railway Trunk Road constructed by Liu Mingchuan. After entering the Japanese colonial rule, the Japanese colonial government expanded the construction of the railway system. The housing demand for construction personnel increased, so the Ministry of Railways dormitory was built here, and the garden-like Hsinchu Park was built nearby. This area gradually became the main residential community for the Japanese. Japanese-style dormitories were the mainstream of Japanese urban planning. The Japanese colonial government built a large number of Japanese-style dormitories in the city through urban planning to meet the growing housing demand. However, in the face of rapid urban development and change in Taiwan, these historically significant Japanese dormitory buildings gradually could not withstand the pressure of natural forces, deliberate human destruction and land development, and slowly disappeared in cities and rural areas.

Opening hours: 10:00-18:00, closed on Mondays

Tickets: Free

Thoughts: Taiwan was once ruled by Japan, so its architecture presents a variety of styles. These Japanese-style wooden houses have also become an important cultural asset and a diverse face of Taiwan. It's worth coming here to learn about the history of this area.
