Essaouira, the windy city of Africa, tastes the authentic Moroccan style

When I passed through Morocco during the winter vacation of 2025, I stopped to volunteer among the local residents and experience the authentic Moroccan style. My favorite place was Essaouira.
Essaouira is known as the Windy City of Africa. Essaouira may not have the most charming beaches in Morocco, but it has the most famous wind. The wind here is really strong. It is a world cultural heritage site and also a filming location for Game of Thrones. Essaouira means "beautiful as a picture" in Arabic.
So how can you experience the local characteristics in Essaouira?
Ride a horse 🐎 or a dune buggy 🏍 to feel the fusion of the fortress 🏙 desert 🏜 and the sea 🏖, feel the original Mediterranean wind, and experience the continuous sound of camel bells, horse hooves and waves, which is refreshing. If you have good physical strength, you can also hike 🥾, remember to bring enough water!
🍲Experience making Morocco’s national dish, Tajine
Go to the market with the locals to buy the ingredients, use lemon, olives, coriander, mixed with nearly ten kinds of spices of different colors, wrap chicken, potatoes, green beans and onions and cook them. The rich aroma makes you want to eat it!
While waiting, I learned how to play Gimbri🎻, a three-stringed instrument made of camel skin, from a local guy, and listened to them sing local songs. Although I didn’t understand a word, I really felt the tranquility and peaceful life in the local area under the influence of music and food.
[Chin] Experience the production process of argan oil in a rural home
Use a stone to knock off the shell of the argan fruit picked from the tree to get the white kernel, put it into a stone mill and grind it finely, then add a small amount of water, knead the fruit puree with your hands like kneading dough, and you will get a clumping fruit puree cake and a small amount of oil. This is the prototype of argan oil, and then filter and precipitate it... During this time, I chatted with the owner of the house about the local customs and practices, and heard the occasional birds singing, chickens crowing, dogs barking, and the aroma of bread wafting from the oven. It is worth enjoying the fun life of returning to the original field.
