Xiyi Gorge is located in Huayin County, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province. Originally known as Zhangchao Valley, it was later renamed "Xiyi Gorge" after Chen Tuan's death, as he was buried there and Emperor Taizong of Song bestowed upon him the title "Master Xiyi." Next to the gorge stands a large rectangular rock known as "Shizuo." It was carved by Chen Tuan's disciple Jia Desheng.
There's a fascinating legend about this "stone chisel." After Emperor Taizong of Song bestowed upon Chen Tuan the title of "Master Xiyi," he resided at the Yuntai Temple at the foot of Mount Hua, "composing poems and composing verses with him for several months." In the second year of Duangong (989), he suddenly said to his disciple Jia Desheng, "You can carve a room out of the stone in Zhangchao Valley. I will rest there." After the stone chamber was completed, Chen Tuan handwrote a few words to Emperor Taizong, stating, "My great destiny has come to an end. The Holy Court will never forget me. On the 22nd of this month, I took my form in Zhangchao Valley, beneath Lotus Peak."
As expected, he passed away. Seven days after Xiyi's death, his limbs remained warm, and a five-colored cloud obscured his mouth, lingering for a month. A fragrant aroma wafted out. The inscription "Yunxia Cave" on a large rock in the river, along with the inscription "Clouds and Trees Produce Fragrance" above the cave, is based on this legend. In ancient times, a shrine with a statue of Chen Tuan was built near Xiyi Gorge. This was the earliest Xiyi Shrine, and the Xiyi Shrine in Yuquanyuan was relocated from this site.
