If you want to find a place in Australia where you can see wildlife up close and enjoy stunning natural scenery, Kangaroo Island will definitely satisfy you! It’s about the size of seven Singapores, so one day is just a quick visit; to fully explore, plan at least two days and one night!
1. Transportation:
To get to Kangaroo Island, you first need to arrive in Adelaide. China Southern Airlines and Cathay Pacific will resume direct flights from Guangzhou and Hong Kong to Adelaide starting November 2025, making travel to South Australia super convenient!
From Adelaide to Kangaroo Island, there are two main options:
Ferry: Take a 1.5-hour drive to Cape Jervis, then a 45-minute ferry ride. Remember to buy tickets in advance (if you bring a car, you need to buy a ticket for the car too; you can also rent a car after arriving on the island).
Plane: It only takes 30 minutes, perfect if you’re in a hurry.
2. Must-visit Attractions & Experiences:
✅ Flinders Chase National Park
A natural wonderland! Here you’ll find Remarkable Rocks, Admiral’s Arch, and the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse. It’s recommended to spend half a day exploring slowly.
Remarkable Rocks are granite formations shaped by sea winds, with stunning colors at sunrise and sunset.
Admiral’s Arch is a natural limestone arch where sea lions often lounge in the sun below.
The Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, built in 1906, offers a soothing sea view from beside it.
The park is open year-round, and tickets can be purchased at the entrance.
✅ Seal Bay
Want to see sea lions up close on the beach? This is the only place in Australia where you can! Hundreds of sea lions live here; plan to spend 1-2 hours.
It opens at 9 AM and closes at 5 PM. You can book a guided tour on the official website or on-site.
✅ Birds of Prey Show
If you love raptors, don’t miss this! You can watch raptor performances and interact with them. It’s very exciting and recommended to spend about 1 hour.
Shows are at 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM daily; check the official website for exact times in advance.
✅ Little Sahara
A large sand dune area resembling the Sahara Desert in Africa. Plan to spend 1-1.5 hours here. You can rent sandboards and slide down the dunes for a thrilling experience! The dunes turn golden under the sunset, perfect for photos.
Avoid the midday heat; it’s best to visit before 10 AM or after 4 PM.
Tips:
✅ Attractions on Kangaroo Island are far apart, so renting a car is recommended. Don’t forget your driver’s license and translation.
✅ During peak season (December to February), food and accommodation are tight, so book in advance.
✅ This is a home for wildlife; don’t feed animals casually as it affects their natural habits.
✅ The weather changes quickly; even in summer, it can get cool and rainy. Bring sunscreen, a jacket, and rain gear.
