Who says Japan is all about trains? On our most recent trip, we opted to rent a car from Tokyo to Fuji, and let me tell you…it was better than expected!
🛻 Renting a car in Japan is not as difficult as you might think.
We booked through an app (like Niconico, Times, or Toyota Rent a Car) and picked up the car from a station in Tokyo. They had English support, and the car was new and very clean.
I recommend choosing a hybrid or EV for exceptionally fuel-efficient driving (or even refueling if you're only going to Fuji).
🗺️ Route
From Tokyo, the drive to Kawaguchiko takes about 2–2.5 hours. The roads are good, and the views are stunning. As you get closer to Fuji, you'll see the peak emerge at regular intervals. You can stop and take photos at rest stops.
🧭 The fun part is stopping at your leisure.
We stopped at a small roadside cafe, a local market selling fresh grapes, and a ramen shop that was completely devoid of tourists – none of these were on our itinerary. But it turned out to be a truly memorable moment.
🗻 Recommended Photo Spots
• Chureito Pagoda (with a view of Mount Fuji and the pagoda)
• Oishi Park (flower garden + lake)
• Lake Kawaguchiko (driving around the lake is just as enjoyable)
💡 Tips
• You must have an International Driving Permit (IDP)
• Drive on the right-hand side of the road, just like in Thailand
• Easy-to-use GPS or you can use Google Maps
