Miraculous Clouds and Kochia at Lake Kawaguchi

During this trip to Japan, I made Lake Kawaguchi, located at the foot of Mount Fuji, a must-visit destination. Although the weather was not ideal with thick clouds covering the sky, the journey turned out to be unexpectedly memorable.

We visited Oishi Park by the lakeside, a place renowned for its stunning views of Mount Fuji and seasonal flowers. It was autumn, and the park's kochia plants (コキア, also known as broom grass) were in their prime viewing season. These fluffy, round shrubs had partially turned a charming orange-red, blending beautifully with the surrounding greenery and the golden hues of dried grass to create a picturesque autumn scene. Strolling through the kochia fields, feeling the gentle breeze, and watching visitors wander and take photos made for a truly relaxing atmosphere.

However, the highlight of this trip was undoubtedly the unique cloud formation atop Mount Fuji. From the moment we arrived at Oishi Park, we noticed a peculiar cloud hovering above the mountain peak. It resembled a hat or perhaps a flying saucer. This "saucer cloud" clung tightly to the summit, and despite the thickening clouds over time, it remained distinctly visible. Occasionally, it was partially obscured by surrounding mist, only to reappear in full clarity moments later.

We also admired Mount Fuji from other perspectives. By the lakeside, the water reflected the distant mountain scenery. Although the lake surface was not perfectly calm, it still conveyed a sense of openness and tranquility. Walking along the lakeside paths, we saw people engaging in water activities and captured stunning views of Mount Fuji framed by the lake and surrounding forests.

In one corner of the park, we discovered a charming small torii gate. Looking through it towards Mount Fuji and the lake offered a unique perspective, adding a special touch to our experience. This allowed us to appreciate the sacred mountain from different angles.

Although we didn’t get to see the snow-capped Mount Fuji under a clear blue sky, the extraordinary "saucer cloud" added a legendary element to our journey. It reminded me that the joy of travel lies not only in witnessing expected beauty but also in encountering unexpected surprises. This visit to Oishi Park became even more unique and unforgettable because of this miraculous cloud. I will always cherish the memory of that autumn afternoon at the foot of Mount Fuji, dancing among the kochia and marveling at the saucer cloud.
