A Pocket of Poetry: Kushida Shrine’s Intimate Sakura Magic

Kushida Shrine may not be the biggest in Fukuoka, but it’s full of quiet charm. Tucked between the busy streets of Hakata, this centuries-old spot turns magical during cherry blossom season—like the afternoon I happened upon a wedding procession.

The couple moved slowly under the shrine’s red torii gate. The groom wore a crisp black kimono, the bride’s white robes trailing over fallen petals on the stone path. Deep pink camellias hung from the eaves, and cherry blossoms floated through the air like confetti. A shopkeeper nearby paused her sweeping to watch, as if she, too, were part of the moment.

Why Kushida Shrine Stands Out:
- Mini Hanami: The small courtyard lets you notice every detail—lanterns swaying, coins shimmering in the offering box, petals clinging to the festival float.
- Double Bloom: Cherry blossoms and camellias bloom together, blending pink and red against the shrine’s bright red walls.

Don’t Miss: The Lucky Cat statue at the back. Rub its paw, then look up at the tree behind it—you’ll spot tiny cat figurines left by merchants hoping for good business.
