If you're looking for summer activities in July, we recommend visiting Fukuoka, Japan, for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival.
This festival takes place in early July, coinciding with the Tanabata Festival around July 7th and onwards.
During this event, elaborately decorated portable shrines, or floats, are used to honor the gods as a traditional way to ward off epidemics, according to ancient beliefs.
Each float weighs up to 1 ton or more and is carried through the main streets of Hakata for several kilometers.
For those who can't attend the festival, you can still admire the beautifully decorated floats displayed at key locations around the city.
