Swiss Travel: Zermatt Train Journey

On this trip, I took a train journey through the heart of the Alps, from Brig to Zermatt! 🇨🇭🏔️

🛄 | An Adventure Along the Mountain Valleys
As the train departed from Brig station, the first stretch of the journey followed the Rhône Valley, gliding peacefully between rivers and fields. Beyond the lush valley visible through the window, the majestic Alps stood shoulder to shoulder. Gradually, the train ascended into the mountains, passing through tunnels surrounded by dense forests and offering fleeting views of waterfalls cascading down rocky cliffs. Even this initial segment made me feel deeply immersed in the vast and profound nature around me.

🌿 The Final Stretch: Climbing the Matter Valley Gorge and Mountains
About an hour after departing Brig, the train entered the mountainous Matter Valley gorge, and the terrain changed dramatically. Steep slopes and rocky cliffs lined the tracks, and in the rack railway sections, the train made a distinctive 'click-clack' sound as it climbed. Outside the window, the narrowing valley, rapid tunnels, and endless bridges unfolded, and at some point, the altitude exceeded 1,600 meters. The view from this height was indescribably magnificent.

🌊 Zermatt: Glacial Waters and the Shadow of the Matterhorn
Finally, we arrived at Zermatt station. True to its reputation as a car-free village, the area in front of the station felt like a different world. Looking down the cobblestone streets, electric cars and horse-drawn carriages replaced traditional vehicles, and in the distance, the sharp silhouette of the Matterhorn stood proudly against the sky. The expansive snowy mountains, the glacial blue sky, and the red hues slowly spreading across the Alpine landscape—everything came together to perfectly conclude this train journey.

1️⃣ Seat Selection – For better views of the gorge and valley during the mountain section, choose a right-side window seat (when departing from Brig).
2️⃣ Time Management – The Brig → Zermatt route takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Allow ample time for the journey.
3️⃣ Tickets & Souvenirs – Secure direct train tickets in advance online or at the counter to ensure a seat. Once in Zermatt, take advantage of the car-free village to leisurely stroll and capture photos.
