The architecture tells a story

The Tongxing Pawnshop in Gaoyou, also known as the North Gate Pawnshop, was established in the early Qing Dynasty. It is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient pawnshops in China. It is said that the pawnshop was owned by the Qing Dynasty official Heshen. After Heshen's downfall, it became a private pawnshop and changed hands several times. The building has five rows and five courtyards, with more than 80 rooms. The building is a traditional brick and wood structure, with blue brick walls, small tile roofs, and gable roofs, arranged in a courtyard layout.
If you are interested in the ancient pawn industry or history and culture, the Tongxing Pawnshop is worth a visit. Before visiting, you can learn some relevant historical background knowledge in advance to better appreciate the cultural connotations.
Since the pawnshop is located in the old city, it is not easy to find and there is no parking nearby, so it is more convenient to take a taxi and stop directly at the door.
