Shamian Island’s cobblestone lanes, you’ll feel like you’ve teleported to 19th-century Europe. Once a foreign concession divided between Britain and France, this leafy 0.3 km² island in the Pearl River is a living museum of colonial architecture, tranquil gardens, and Guangzhou’s multicultural past.
Historical Echoes:
Built after the Opium Wars, Shamian (meaning “sandy surface”) was a diplomatic and trading hub for Western powers. Its streets still bear European names like Avenue de Paris and Victoria Road.
The island's layout, divided into French (east) and British (west) sections, reflects its colonial legacy, with churches, consulates, and mansions frozen in time.
