Is this Guangzhou? Check out a different perspective.

Shamian Island in Guangzhou is a tourist destination known for its beautiful European architecture and tranquil atmosphere.

A peaceful oasis in the bustling city — featuring parks, colonial-style buildings, and shaded pedestrian streets, perfect for leisurely walks and relaxation.

Ideal for a half-day to full-day trip — you can explore the architecture and enjoy riverside cafes at your own pace.

Originally a trading port during the Opium War era, from the Song to Qing dynasties, the island became a true island in 1859 after a canal was dug. It was divided into British (3/5) and French (2/5) concession zones.

Safety measures were implemented, such as closing the bridge at 10:00 PM, police patrols, and constructing Western-style buildings like banks and residences.

After 1949, these buildings were repurposed as offices, state enterprises, apartments, and churches were converted into factories.

Highlights:

European colonial architecture — Featuring buildings in British and French styles, such as Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel (1890) and Christ Church (1865).

Tranquil and aesthetic atmosphere — Perfect for photography, strolling through buildings and gardens in a relaxed setting.

Cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops — Especially along the riverside and pedestrian streets.

Luxury White Swan Hotel — A renowned five-star hotel located by the river on Shamian Island, opened in 1983 and renovated in 2015.

Art and sculptures — Bronze statues reflecting "East meets West" scattered across the island.

Government offices and museums — Including a police station, art museum, and elementary school on the island.
