Haikou Wugong Temple | The dappled sunlight on the ancient trees and red walls

Wugong Temple
Located in Qiongshan District, Haikou City, Hainan Province, also known as "Hainan's First Building", it is the birthplace of Hainan's culture of demoted officials, covering an area of over 70 acres, and was first built in the fifteenth year of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1889).

The temple enshrines Tang Dynasty Prime Minister Li Deyu, Song Dynasty Prime Ministers Li Gang, Zhao Ding, Grand Scholar Li Guang, Hu Quan, and other five historical ministers who were demoted to Hainan.

Although the Wugong were demoted officials, their loyalty and integrity never faded. They made significant contributions to spreading the Central Plains culture and cultivating talents, and were deeply respected and remembered by the local people, which led to the establishment of this temple.

Wugong Temple is divided into the ancient building area and the new museum area, with relics dating back to the Song and Yuan periods, such as springs, pavilions, and Dongpo Academy, and the Sugong Temple that was first built during the Ming Dynasty.
Su Shi, demoted to Hainan, made his first stop here, guiding the people to dig the Fusu Spring and Xixin Spring, and because of solving the drinking water problem, people built two pavilions in gratitude. Three years later, Su Shi was pardoned and revisited this place, renaming them to Jiongjiao Pavilion and Fusu Pavilion. The twin springs and two pavilions are the first batch of landscapes of Wugong Temple.
The Fusu Spring still exists today and is known as "Hainan's First Spring".

In June 2001, it was announced by the State Council as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

Impressions:
For a cultural tour, it is necessary to know the relevant background knowledge, and the background knowledge of Wugong Temple is the culture of demotion (culture of demoted officials, culture of exile).
During the Tang and Song dynasties, the remote and barbaric "End of the Earth and Corner of the Sea" was often the place of exile for demoted officials, which was a punishment second only to beheading.
Demoted officials brought advanced Central Plains culture here, educating the local people, thereby promoting the local economic and cultural development. The Wugong are representatives of this.

Tour time: About 2 hours
