During our trip to Haikou, we took the opportunity to visit Leiqiong Global Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark that showcases Hainan’s volcanic past.
The park isn’t huge — you can comfortably explore it within 2.5 to 3 hours — but it’s packed with fascinating sights. We strolled through lush tropical forest, explored the Maanling Crater, and even wash your hands at the “龙口” (Dragon Mouth), which is a notable geological formation resembling a dragon’s mouth, from which water flows. It is believed that if you wash your hands here, it can bring you good luck and blessings, symbolizing purification and a fresh start :)
What surprised us most was how serene and green everything felt, despite the dramatic volcanic setting. It’s a perfect half-day trip if you’re in Haikou and love nature, geology, or just quiet, scenic walks.
The park itself isn’t very large and can be comfortably explored within 2.5 to 3 hours. During our visit, we took a 20-minute cab ride from central Haikou to reach the park. The trails are well-maintained, making for an enjoyable and educational experience.
