Located in Hakodate City, Hokkaido, this is Japan's first Western-style fort, characterized by its unique star-shaped design. It was constructed by the Edo Shogunate to prepare for foreign invasions and was completed in 1864 (Genji 1). However, it soon became the final battleground of the Hakodate War between the Meiji government forces and the former shogunate forces.
Designated as a Special Historic Site by the Japanese government in 1952, this fort has witnessed significant historical events, including the Boshin War. The star-shaped structure was inspired by European fortress cities, designed to minimize blind spots and efficiently repel enemies using cannons.
The site, which is about five times the size of Tokyo Dome, is home to various plants and flowers, making it a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in spring.
