Hanoi's Thang Long Imperial Citadel is a historic site steeped in Vietnam's long history. Built during the Ly Dynasty in the early 11th century, the ancient citadel has since undergone expansions and restorations under various dynasties and foreign influences. While much of its magnificent structure has been restored, its rich history and culture remain unchanged.
The citadel served as the political, military, and cultural center of Vietnam and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. Inside, ancient wooden structures, brick walls, and various artifacts and relics are preserved. The 11th-century stone mirror reliefs and relics related to royal authority are particularly noteworthy.
Outside the citadel, defensive walls, gates, and military relics are lined up, providing a valuable insight into the traditional military defense system of the past. Furthermore, the citadel's interior features restored traditional structures and relics from the royal and governmental past, offering a deeper understanding of Vietnamese history.
